To enhance the capacity of the rail network in Maharashtra, the Railways has approved the doubling of the 10.86 kilometer long Chowk-Karjat rail section under Central Railway. With an estimated cost of approximately ₹497 crore, the project aims to make rail operations smoother and more efficient.
This section, part of the Panvel-Chowk-Karjat route, is significant for both passenger and freight transportation. Doubling the existing single line will create additional rail capacity, thereby improving train movement along this route.
This project has been sanctioned under railway capacity expansion works involving doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyovers, and bypasses. Completion of the project will help improve the operation of rail traffic.
Upon completion, the project is expected to enable the operation of five additional passenger trains daily in both directions on the Chowk-Karjat section. It will also add around 18.35 million tonnes per annum of freight capacity and help reduce delays in freight train movement.
The doubling of the section will enhance rail capacity and facilitate smoother passenger and freight transportation on this important route.
