Indian Railways Approves Rs 295 Crore Kavach 4.0 Project for 660 Route Km in Izzatnagar Division

Date:

Indian Railways has approved the implementation of Kavach Version 4.0 on a rail route spanning approximately 660 kilometers within the Izzatnagar Division of the North Eastern Railway (NER). The project is estimated to cost around ₹295 crore. This approval has been granted under a comprehensive project aimed at deploying the Kavach system supported by a Long-Term Evolution (LTE)-based communication backbone across the remaining rail sections of Indian Railways.

Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system developed in India. Its primary objective is to prevent incidents such as Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) and potential rail accidents by continuously monitoring train movements.

The system plays a crucial role in ensuring operations adhere to safety standards by monitoring the train’s position and speed. When necessary, ‘Kavach’ automatically activates the braking system to safely control the train. It facilitates the safe operation of trains within prescribed speed limits, enhances operational reliability, and helps ensure the safety of rail services even during dense fog or other adverse weather conditions.

The sanctioned work covers the remaining sections of the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway. Safety infrastructure on the identified railway sections will be further strengthened through the provision of Kavach Version 4.0.
